Can you believe we are already in December? It’s been a great year for games on the xBox 360, with some fantastic titles out, which I’ve been lucky enough to play most of.
I’ve narrowed down my review to 5 points and I’ve made my top 10 games I’ve played this year, they may not have been released in 2008 but I have only got round to playing this year…
1. Best/Favourite Game – Call of Duty 4
I couldn’t decide between Call of Duty 4, FIFA 09 or Gears of War 2, all are great games with good multiplayer (Epic have worked hard to address the early problems). But based on the amount of hours I have put into playing it Call of Duty will have to be the winner..
Runner Up -
Gears 2 – Great game, can’t wait to get more into multiplayer…
2. Worst/Biggest Letdown – Assasins Creed
Some parts of this game were fantastic, the beautiful environemnt, the wonderful movement of your character, but so repetitive and eventually boring. I had to force myself to finish the main story, but I won’t bother going back to finish off the achievements.
Runner up -
Fable 2 – It’s a brilliant game, but some of the bugs and the way Lionhead dealt with missing codes and messing up Pub Game pre-orders really annoyed me.
3. Surprising/Hidden Gem – Burnout Paradise
I’ve always loved the Burnout series, but randomly picked this up. As I expected, it is a great game and the opne world worked really well, but what suprised me was the support and extra content from Criterion, and it just keeps coming! It’s a real shame other games haven’t followed suit.
Runner Up -
Fallout 3 – For some reason this didn’t pick up on my Gamedar despite loving oblivion, but what a fantastic game!
Honourable Mention – NXE – Well Done Microsoft
4. Best XBL Moment
I’ve had loads but mainly some great matches on COD 4, search and destroy is fanastic mode, and I may have to get back into it at some point…
5. Will 2009 Better 2008? - Yes
Two Words – Bioshock 2…
My Top 10 Games this Year Are:
10: Tiger Woods 09
9: Mass Effect
8: GTA IV
7: BF: Bad Company
6: Fable 2
5: Burnout Paradise
4: FIFA 09
3: Fallout 3
2: Gears of War 2
1: Call of Duty 4
What about everyone else? Feel free to post in the comments.

Great post Dave!
Best/Favourite Game – Gears of War 2
Wasn’t too fussed about the first Gears, but got sucked into the hype of Gears 2 and the single player certainly didnt disappoint. Some fantastic movie type moments that really did send shivers down my spine.
Multiplayer was a major letdown at first – 15 minutes to get into a game and then too many screaming kids. Hoping that as they’re fixing the issues will get more people on my friends list playing.
Runner Up – COD 4
Rented this one recently – some great single player moments (All Ghillied Up – laying low as patrol almost walks over you), and some movie magic – nuclear explosion early on. Multiplayer is a bit too hectic for me, but giving it some more time before I make a definitive decision.
2. Worst/Biggest Letdown – Assasins Creed
Completely agree with Assassins Creed – so boring I didnt finish it.
Mass Effect – could never really get into it, dont know why.
Runner up – Mass Effect – could never really get into it, dont know why.
3. Surprising/Hidden Gem – Madden 09
Really enjoyed this, never played the others in the franchise, but this hit the spot.
Runner Up – Blazing Angels 2 – another renter which kept me busy for a good few weeks. May pick it up again at some point.
Honourable Mention – NXE – Well Done Microsoft – ditto, love NXE. All I need now is a hard drive to install GOW2 onto!
4. Best XBL Moment
FInally getting a game on GOW2!
5. Will 2009 Better 2008? – Yes – bloody hope so!
6. Special Note
Avatar really was as bad as people said it was!!
My Top 8 Games (that I bought, not necessarily released) this Year Are:
8: Blazing Angels
7: GUitar Hero 3
6: Lost
5: COD3
4: Madden 09
3: COD4
2: Halo 3
1: Gears of War 2
Phil,
Mass Effect took me a while to get into, but once I did it was brilliant, I keep meaning to go back to finsih my second playthrough.
I may rent Madden, loving the NFL at the moment so may have to give that a try…
Aww man, I think I’m the only one who wasn’t let down by Assassin’s Creed. My advice to anyone is; never follow the hype or read the reviews. Play with zero expectation and be pleasantly surprised!
@Rockers – I wasn’t especially let down by it, I just got bored as I got towards the end, just one of those things, If they could have found a way to make it a bit more varied then it would a great game.
