Dead Space Review

Dead Space is an amazing Survival Horror, taking ideas from Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock to create an immersive & exciting game.

You take on the role of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles a polymorphic, virus-like, alien infestation which turns humans into grotesque alien monsters called “Necromorphs”, on board a stricken interstellar mining ship named the USG Ishimura.

The game is beautiful, with really well though out environments. The brilliant use of lighting and fantastic audio will really get your heart racing at times. I’m terrible for games that make you jump and I always seem to fall for them but it makes it fun! The games takes Resident Evil 4’s over the shoulder view for controlling your character. There is no HUD but instead there is something much cleverer.

On your back you have a bar which shows your health, another hologram appears when you aim your weapon to show your ammo. There is also a bar for stasis and another hologram for Air Supply. The most clever things is when you are looking where to go for your next objective, click down on your right stick to project a beam of light to the floor, then in the direction you’re meant to go, brilliant! Incoming video also pops up in front of you as well as any audio or text logs you find along your way.

Extra gore with that sir?

This is one of the most gruesome games I have played for a while, not only are some of the enemies disgusting but the way to kill them is to dismember them limb by limb which means blood spews everywhere, there are two achievements for taking apart 500 and 100 limbs, it’s great fun.

All of the weapons are quite cool, and they are all upgradeable and they become really powerful, which will be useful when you try to take on impossible mode, which unlocks when you complete the game on any other difficulty.

All of the achievements are quite good, it will probably take you about three playthroughs to get the 1000 and it shouldn’t be too difficult (it’s taken me nine hours to get through the medium campaign). I’ve really enjoyed this game, especially as it was a game that was off my radar for quite along time.
