Red Faction Guerrilla Review

Lets face it, blowing stuff up is fun (in Video Games of course!) and thanks to Red Faction Guerrilla long may the fun continue!

The Story…

RFG is set on Mars, your Character Alex Mason goes to visit his brother to help him with work. Unfortunately it’s not long before your brother is killed by the Earth Defence Force (EDF) and you join Red Faction to help avenge his death. Most of Mars has been taken over by the EDF and your job is to take out their areas and bases of operations through a series of missions and side quests.

Apart from the main missions there are side quests know as Guerrilla actions, these involve destroying a building in a certain way within a timeframe or rescuing prisoners from different buildings. After a while the missions start to become repetitive but you shouldn’t notice too much because the game is so much fun. To help break down the EDF’s control you can infiltrate their different bases buildings and destroy them using a massive Arsenal of weapons that you can also upgrade. To do this you collect salvage from the destruction you cause to buildings and vehicles.

Time to Cause some damage…

This leads me to the games speciality, destruction. The physics engine immediately impresses here allowing you to take apart each structure chunk by chunk and thanks to the power of the next generation consoles there is a huge amount of detail. You notice this even more when you start to bash buildings down with your trusty sledgehammer. Some towers will only take a few hits before you see it crumbling down, but there are some pretty immense buildings that take ages before you see it crashing down to earth. Obviously if you are using a more powerful weapon it won’t take as long but if you fancy relieving some stress the sledgehammer is your best bet.

It doesn’t end there….

Volition has done really well with the single player and thankfully the multiplayer is even more fun. Each of the maps is based on smaller sections from the single player map. Modes are pretty standard with single and Team Deathmatch as well as CTF. Other games include siege and damage control which involve lots of destruction which never seems to get boring.

Overall I found this game a lot of fun and it is definitley one that will be staying in my collection

8/10
